Skill: Scooping

Hand Placement

·        The dominant hand should be at the top of the stick right below
    the throat.

·        The non-dominant hand should be right in front of the butt end of
    the stick.
For example, if you are right handed, the butt end of your
stick will be next to your left hip and visa versa.

Teaching Cues

·        Outside foot next to the ball
·        Bend at the knees and waist (lower your butt)
·        Knuckles scrape the ground
·        Back hand is a “pump handle” (similar to shoveling sand or snow)
·        Scoop through (a quick scooping motion directly under the ball)
·        Bring the pocket in front of your face

***Trouble Shooting***

If a student is having trouble scooping a ball, it is because:
1) They are
not low enough
(knuckles not scraping the ground, need to bend their
knees and waist more)

2) They did not bring the butt end of the stick down (pump handle)
and/or scoop through.

Progression and Tasks

·        Stationary scooping (10 times each hand)
·        Scooping a stationary ball on the run (roll the ball in front of you,
wait until it stops, and then scoop it 10 times)

·        Rebound from wall or partner scooping (rolling the ball back and
forth to each other)

·        Scooping a ball while it is rolling away from you (roll the ball 5
yards in front of you and scoop it before the ball stops rolling.

Challenge yourself by rolling the ball away from you farther and faster.

Modified Scooping Games

Individual scooping contest:

Line up 10 balls 3 feet apart.  See how many balls you can scoop up
and keep in your net at the same time without dropping a ball while
trying to scoop another ball up.

*In order to be successful, the student has to bend at the knees and
waist, have their knuckles scrape the ground, bring the butt end down
(like a pump handle), and scoop through.

Ball Hunt

Scatter 50 -100 tennis balls around your teaching area.  Place 5-10
buckets or crates around your teaching area.  Each student will
attempt to scoop as many balls as they can and place it in a bucket.
They may only scoop 1 ball at a time.  Student will keep their own
count.

Scooping Relays

Have 2 students at 1 cone and 2 students at another cone 20 yards
away.  Using 1 ball, the 1st student will run with the ball towards the
other cone. When the student reaches the midway point, he/she will
roll the ball to the student waiting at the cone.  The student waiting
at the cone will run towards the ball, scoop it up, and then repeat the
process.

·        Keep Away (monkey in the middle)

Use groups of 3.  Have 2 students 10 yards apart with 1 student in
between them.  The 2 students on the outside will roll the ball to each
other and attempt to successfully scoop the ball (no bobbles, a clean
scoop) while the student in the middle is chasing using mock defense
(the person that is trying to scoop the ball).  Switch positions after 5
scoops.

·        3 Person Scoop and Roll Back Stationary (2 balls)

The 2 Students on the outside will have a ball (S1 & S3) and be 10
yards apart.  1 student (S2) is in between them.  S2 will run towards S1.
S1 will roll the ball to S2.  S2 will scoop the ball and roll it back to S1.
S2 will then run towards S3 and repeat the same process.  After 5
scoops, have another student go in the middle.

3 Person Scoop and Roll Back on the Run with 1ball (advanced drill)

The student in the middle (S2) starts with the ball.  He/she will roll the
ball to the student to his/her left (S1).  S1 will scoop the ball and roll
it back to S2.  S2 will roll the ball to his/her right (S3).  S3 will scoop
the ball and roll it back to S2.

1) S2 rolls the ball to S1.  S1 rolls the ball back to S2.  S3 runs up field
with S1 and S2.

·        Three Person Weave (scooping) (advanced drill)

Have 3 students spread 10 yards apart.  The student in the middle (S2)
starts with the ball.  He/she will roll the ball to the student on his/her
left (S1).  S1 will run towards the middle of the field (where S1 started)
and scoop the ball while S2 will run behind S1toward the direction
he/she rolled the ball.  S1 will roll the ball to S3 who will be running
towards the middle of the field and S1 will run behindS3 towards the
direction they rolled the ball.

Key Point: Have the students follow their roll.  Wherever they roll the
ball, they run towards that direction and behind the person they rolled
it too.

Offensive Strategies:

-moving to the ball

-pass and replace
