Lacrosse Skills, Tasks, and Trouble Shooting

Modified Games

·        Ultimate Lacrosse (4 to 5 students per team)
Ultimate Lacrosse is the same basic concept as Ultimate Frisbee.
The object of the game is to get the ball in the “end zone”.

Offensive Concepts
-v-cut
-moving without the ball
-give and go

Defensive Concepts
-man to man (1 vs. 1) defense
-45 degree drop step
-triangle concept: position yourself so you can see the person with
the ball and see the person you are guarding.  You are the third point.
This is also known as “ball-you-man”.

Rules
-3 steps (adjust steps to the skill level of the class and size of the
field)

-3 seconds to hold the ball
-3 feet away (a stick length) from the thrower
-let the thrower throw without interference
-if the offensive team drops the ball, they will leave the ball where
it dropped for the defensive team to pick up and immediately look for
someone on the other team to guard.

Adjustments to the game
·        Have a highly skilled group use only their non-dominant hand or
increase the amounts of passes before they can score in the end zone.

·        After a score, have the team that got scored on start with the ball
at midfield so they do not get stuck on their defensive side.

·        If there are students that are not participating, incorporate a rule
that every person on the team has to catch a pass before you can
score.

3 vs. 3 Half Court Modified Games (On outdoor basketball courts)

**Great game for large class sizes

Same basic game and rules as 3 vs. 3 half court basketball.

 Offensive Concepts
-v-cut
-give and go
-moving without the ball

Defensive Concepts
-man to man defense
-45 degree drop step
-triangle concept: position yourself so you can see the person with the
ball and see the person you are guarding.  You are the third point.
This is also known as “ball-you-man”.

Rules

-Use the red square above the basketball hoop as a goal.
-Offense needs to stay out of the key area or “paint” (rectangular area
by the basketball hoop).

-Defense is played with your feet (similar to basketball defense)
-If you are defending the person with the ball, you need to be a stick
length
away (3 feet) from the thrower.
-let the thrower throw the ball without any interference.
-If a goal is scored or the defensive team gains possession of the ball,
the team that was scored on needs to take the ball to the top of the
key before they can start on offense

How to Score
-Complete 2 passes before a shot (adjust # of passes to skill level)
-Shoot the ball in the red square above the hoop on the backboard for
1 point

-2 points if the ball goes in the basketball hoop.

3 vs. 3 or 4 vs. 4 Full Court Modified Lacrosse Game
(On Outdoor Basketball Courts)

Same rules as the 3 vs. 3 half court game.  The only difference is it is
a full court game.

*In many sports such as soccer or basketball, when the ball goes out
of bounds, the team that gets possession of the ball has to stay out
of bounds and throw the ball in.  In lacrosse, when the ball goes out
of bounds, the team that gets possession of the ball will step onto
the field and has the choice of passing the ball or running with the ball.

4 vs. 4 Modified Field Lacrosse
Use field paint or cones to mark off a 40 yard x 30 yard field.  Use
buckets or crates as goals.  To make the game more challenging, place
a cone on top of the crate or bucket for the students to aim at.

^=cone

O=goals (buckets or crates)

the team that was scored on takes the ball to midfield before they can
start on offense.

Lacrosse Wall Ball: Game 1:Target Practice (handball courts)
Mark targets with different point values with sidewalk chalk.  Have 3 to
4 students per handball court with only 1 ball.  The object of the game
is to reach 100 points.  Points are scored by throwing the ball in the air
at a target.  If the student hits the target, they yell out the number of
points they earned plus their previous score.  After the ball hits the
wall, it is a “live” ball and any student can get the ball so they can
throw it at a target.

Lacrosse Wall Ball: Game 2: Never Ending Knockout (handball courts)
Have 3 to 4 students per handball court with only 1 ball.  Mark a line
about 8 feet high with sidewalk chalk across the handball court.  If a
student gets 3 outs, they need to jog a lap or do 10 push ups or sit ups
to return back to the game.

Rules

1) If a student throws the ball against the wall and another student
catches the ball, the student who threw the ball gets 1 out.

2) If a student throws the ball against the wall and another student
attempts to catch the ball but drops it, the student who drops the ball
needs to run and touch the wall with their stick before another student
throws the ball above the marked 8 foot line.  If the student does not
touch the wall before the ball reaches the wall, the student gets an out.

3) If a student throws the ball and it does not reach the wall on a fly,
the student who threw the ball needs to run and touch the wall with
their stick before another student throws the ball above the marked 8
foot line.  If the student does not touch the wall before the ball reaches
the wall, the student gets an out.

4) If a student tries to block a throw or impede the thrower’s ability to
throw, they automatically get an out.
